Gold Bubble – Brexit Fear

gold bubble
Everybody and his financial planner seem to favor gold these days, at least on the parallel reality that is business television. Some like gold because of the current uncertainty plaguing Europe, with the upcoming Brexit vote in focus. Others proclaim gold’s merits because of the Fed’s decision to refrain from rate action in June, and because of the market’s expectation for no action until December. But gold favor based on these factors is set upon false premise, in my view, and so a gold bubble has been inflated. I expect it will burst as current expectations are replaced by a different reality over the next couple months. Thus, I continue to recommend the sale of gold securities and also hedging against long-term physical gold holdings, which are always recommended for long-term diversification and wealth protection. See this full story at Gold Bubble - Part I (on Brexit).

Fool’s Gold

gold dollar chart
Gold to Dollar Chart at Fidelity

Gold was on the rise in New York trade Monday, contradicting its trend since the FOMC meeting minutes release. Gold might even benefit some more this week if any of the many events before us stir up volatility in financial markets. But don’t buy it, because it is fool’s gold, and I expect it will leave you poorer (not richer) before long. Gold started higher today as the dollar declined, but as the dollar recovered, gold remained on high ground. The dollar will continue to appreciate as U.S. economic data supports a Fed action that seems all but guaranteed at this point. So, this is fool’s gold, and I suspect its bidders may be suffering from delirium due to the year’s big gains. See the whole story at Fool's Gold Delirium.

Sell GDX - Gold Miners will Fall Harder than Gold

danger
In the middle of May, via the report For Gold, It’s the Beginning of the End of the Run, I indicated the downturn I had been looking for in precious metals had begun. The catalyst was a pivot in the economic trend and in expectations around the Fed, each of which serves refreshed dollar strength. Since then, gold has come under severe pressure, and investors are now seriously questioning whether it will recover or sink significantly further. Gold miners’ shares have fallen farther than gold since the day before the Fed minutes release because they had exaggerated the run higher. However, from this point, gold miners’ shares and the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners Trust (NYSE: GDX) could appear to lag gold until investors are convinced gold will anchor itself at lower levels. Though, once that fact is established, and it should not take long, gold miners should fall harder and further than gold. It is because the miners’ shares are a derivative to the gold price, with their revenues and earnings levered to the price of the commodity. See the whole story at Gold Miners will Fall Harder than Gold - Sell GDX.

For Gold the Run is Done

danger
This report was published before gold dropped precipitously on Wednesday. See the link below.

For gold, it seems Friday’s retail sales data marked the beginning of the end. Confirming my suspicions about the economy, April’s data was far better than the winter reports. It supports my “negative feedback loop” theory, and it means the dollar is more likely to appreciate moving forward. I have been warning for months about the likelihood of a Fed rate hike in June, and the idea is now gaining traction among some pundits as well. It all adds up to a strengthening dollar, which means it’s the beginning of the end for the year’s early gold run. See the whole story at For Gold It's the Beginning of the End of the Run.

Gold's Big Week

wall street
Gold gained a great swath of ground last week. If you took a few days off, you have returned to an alien price point for the precious metal. Gold's big gain can be explained somewhat simply though. See the whole story here: Gold's Big Gain.

The Fortunes of Gold Must Change as the Fed Turns

gold
As the Fed turns, or as perception of the Federal Reserve’s plans for this year change, so should gold’s fortunes. Gold has benefited significantly this year from a shift of expectations for the Fed. It is my expectation that those perceptions will turn again, but in a fashion that is detrimental to gold this time. See the whole story here, The Fortunes of Gold Change as the Fed Turns.

Gold's False Profit

false prophet
In recent days, media and markets have sought to depict gold as the premier safe haven destination for capital today. I continue to view gold as an important diversification tool and long-term alternative to the U.S. dollar. However, I do not see gold as a near-term safe haven. If I’m right, gold offers false promise to those believing it will safeguard them from near-term U.S. equity market volatility driven by oil price decline. The important reason why I don’t trust gold is because of the probable cause of another energy decline, Europe. If the nascent pressures against Europe stymie the European economy, it would likely lead to oil price decline and U.S. equity market volatility, but at the same time, it would cause relative dollar strength. So those believing gold will protect them against this specific near-term risk are mistaken, because it threatens the euro and thereby serves the dollar, which in turn discounts gold prices for U.S. investors. See the full story at Gold's False Promise.

Sell Gold Miners – They're Levered to the Gold Collapse Catalyst

easy does it
Gold prices should suffer a setback if the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) dot-plot economic forecasts show Fed-member expectations for rate hikes this year. The market has priced out that possibility and therefore would have to adjust to it, which I believe results in a sharp move higher for the dollar and a collapse in gold prices. Gold miners are naturally levered to gold prices, as their profitability depends on it. Thus, I have taken a short position in the recently enriched Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX). I suggest holders of the GDX sell it now. See the full report: Sell Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) - Levered to Gold Collapse Catalyst.

A Catalyst is Coming to Crush Gold

government ignorance
Wednesday’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is expected by many to serve gold well, but I believe a surprise is in store. The market expects the Fed to pause its rate tightening in March, which is good for gold. But the market has not accounted for the Fed dot-plot forecasts, which I expect are likely to show Fed expectations for 2 to 3 rate hikes this year. Over the course of the last several months, the market has whittled its own expectations down to one or none for the year. Thus, a contrasting and conflicting message from the Fed could reignite the dollar and crush gold. See the full report on the Catalyst Coming to Crush Gold.
