WEDNESDAY'S MARKET: Whether it's the Weather or Not
It seems there’s a debate now echoing across financial markets, and it’s about whether the weather is really the culprit behind bad housing and other data. I think it’s obvious, but some curious nuances found in a few reports are confusing matters. For instance, the fact that while Housing Starts fell precipitously in January, they rose in the weather beaten Northeast for some reason. The last thing the market wants is to lose its ability to blame the weather, because then we must face perhaps a sadder reality.
U.S. Markets
Stocks were defiant to start the day, despite miserable housing news in a weak January Starts Report. Later, the FOMC meeting minutes release was not necessarily damaging, but stocks had been digesting the mellow news of the morning all day long and giving back gains throughout the day.
International Markets
Chaos in the Ukraine, Thailand and the Central African Republic has the world uneasy about the stability of the civilized world. It’s the Ukraine that is especially concerning, given that it puts Russia and the E.U. and U.S. at odds.
Economic Data
Economic data today was disheartening, as predicted in my earlier market preview published at Seeking Alpha. Housing Starts data showed more softening in January, likely due to weather. Some are questioning whether weather is really at play, given that the Northeast saw an increase in starts.
Producer Prices rose as expected, but inflation signs did not show up. The FOMC meeting minutes were thought here to possibly show unneeded inflation concerns, but the contrary seems to have proven true, if CNBC reporting is to be believed. You may review the release via the link above.
Commodity Markets (13:35 ET)
Natural gas prices soared today as Winter Storm Seneca targets the Midwest with blizzard conditions, and temperatures look set to return to below freezing through the 10-day forecast for the Northeastern U.S. Due to the cold, natural gas stores are being depleted and so prices are running.
Stock Activity
The daily leaders list includes a couple of jewelers while the losers list includes a shipping company. What’s the common theme? Hopefully not signs of inflation against the dollar and weakening global trade.
