Week Ahead for Stocks
The week ahead presents some interesting catalysts for stocks. First and foremost, Janet Yellen appears for the first time on the very public scene as she testifies before both houses of Congress. She’ll need to present more like an iron fist than a timid librarian to win the trust of investors here. I’m worried about that, especially as a ton of other Fed members are set to speak and possibly undermine her credibility. Look also for critical trade data out of China; you’ll recall what that did to us last time around, unless you drank your pain away. The earnings wire has some heavy hitters across a wide spectrum of industries – see our notation below. Please do visit the blog regularly for our daily updates of voice and video! Also, note our newly added Twitter feed for constant contact and discussion – we call it “Live Stock Chat.”
Our founder earned clients a 23% average annual return over five years as a stock analyst on Wall Street. "The Greek" has written for institutional newsletters, Businessweek, Real Money, Seeking Alpha and others, while also appearing across TV and radio. While writing for Wall Street Greek, Mr. Kaminis presciently warned of the financial crisis.
Stocks soared into the close of the week in the last five-day trading period. Friday’s Employment Situation Report was as questionable as ever, so many attributed the rise to bargain hunting. There’s also some consideration being given to future Fed tapering of its asset purchase tapering plan. Institutional investors may in fact be coming back to stocks to start the new month. If there is no economic slowdown and the weather is in fact holding back real estate and the economy, then the smart money may be worth following here.
Janet Yellen will have our full attention this week as she testifies for the first time to both houses of Congress. When Ben Bernanke first faced the scene, many will have forgotten that he came across as meek and weak, if not as nervous as they get. He proved to be perhaps the strongest Fed Chairman since Paul Volcker. Janet Yellen, being an older woman who looks like a librarian, might not get as much of a break from the rough and relentless market. I’m truly concerned about how perception of her and her Fed could lose market confidence in the coming months. On top of that, other Fed members seem to have come unhinged since Bernanke started packing, and too many of them are set to speak this week – hopefully it will not be about their inflation concerns again. Be afraid… be very afraid. This is going to matter more than data this week, but be sure to be on top of the retail sales data, which will be reported in the period. Oh, and don’t miss the trade data out of China this week, because last time around, that disappointment hurt us badly.
Earnings season is wearing down, but we wore down a bit as well because we still had to note a bunch of reporters for you here. Look for interesting news from Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN) – Carl Icahn bought this after we had some nice things to say about it (Good morning Carl). I believe he has divested his interest more recently, but you’ll have to check for yourself. Sprint (NYSE: S), PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) and a bunch of insurers, biotech names and industrials are reporting. Maybe take note of the news from Total (NYSE: TOT), Encana (NYSE: ECA) and Pioneer (NYSE: PXD) if you want to get a gauge on energy.
