Greek---looks like you might be proven right:
The White House on Tuesday flatly denied an Army Radio report that claimed US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran before the end of his term. It said that while the military option had not been taken off the table, the Administration preferred to resolve concerns about Iran's push for a nuclear weapon "through peaceful diplomatic means."
Army Radio had quoted a top official in Jerusalem claiming that a senior member in the entourage of President Bush, who concluded a trip to Israel last week, had said in a closed meeting here that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were of the opinion that military action against Iran was called for.
The official reportedly went on to say that "the hesitancy of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice" was preventing the administration from deciding to launch such an attack on the Islamic Republic for the time being.
The Army Radio report, which was quoted by The Jerusalem Post and resonated widely, stated that according to assessments in Israel, the recent turmoil in Lebanon, where Hizbullah has de facto established control of the country, was advancing an American attack.
Bush, the official reportedly said, considered Hizbullah's show of strength to constitute evidence of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's growing influence. In Bush's view, the official said, "the disease must be treated - not its symptoms."
However, the White House on Tuesday afternoon dismissed the story. In a statement, it said that "[the US] remain[s] opposed to Iran's ambitions to obtain a nuclear weapon. To that end, we are working to bring tough diplomatic and economic pressure on the Iranians to get them to change their behavior and to halt their uranium enrichment program.
It went on: "As the President has said, no president of the United States should ever take options off the table, but our preference and our actions for dealing with this matter remain through peaceful diplomatic means. Nothing has changed in that regard."
In an address to the Knesset during his visit here last week, Bush said that "the president of Iran dreams of returning the Middle East to the Middle Ages."
"America stands with you in firmly opposing Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions," Bush said. "Permitting the world's leading sponsor of terror to possess the world's deadliest weapon would be an unforgivable betrayal of future generations. For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."
Uncle,
First, let's make it clear to the readers, you're not my uncle correct..?
Now, yes, it seems plainly clear to me that we are preparing to fight Iran. He set forth an Axis of Evil, and he will dismantle it as he promised. He (and his father) filled his reserve each time before destroying Iraq, and he's done it again now.
However, Israel will lead the way. The U.S. is just not in a global position to do that. Israel will bomb, Iran will lash out, and the U.S. will take Iran apart from the air and sea. BUT, there's another risk.
We've telegraphed our plans so well in advance that we may now be surprised in some manner. This was Bush's fatal mistake. His emotions, and the nation's need for leadership led him to spell it all out in that state of the union address.
There exist such things called tactical nukes that can be used to destroy say an entire fleet of ships. One has to wonder just how far Russia is willing to go to insure the U.S. is not THE ONLY dominant force in the Middle East. I know this sounds far-fetched, but so did Pearl Harbor.
I would never expect Russia or another large not so friendly power in Asia to act blatantly at this point. The manner would have to be difficult to place blame. Iranians would deploy the weapons. But, could a Russian submarine attack be hidden? Can a US Carrier be taken out by a Russian submarine and the world not know? You military experts tell me how possible that is possible or not.
This is my fear. And one more, that a nuclear weapon sits today in NYC and/or Washington, waiting. You won't find The Greek in NYC after day 1, and that's why.
Take note of this. I once worked in Downtown Manhattan. After 9/11, I witnessed Middle Eastern men video taping the Brooklyn/Battery Tunnel air vent from a parked car on the end of the FDR expressway. I immediately called the police and spoke with the FBI, and what this officer shared with me regarding the amount of intelligence discovered after 9/11, was well, noteworthy.
Destroying a NYC tunnel during rush hour would kill thousands driving in the tunnel, flood the city and cause panic. Destroying many at the same time, well I can't imagine. I've no idea how much water might flood parts of Manhattan and how dangerous that might be. It's just one scenario, but it's interesting how I find myself in these situations, witness to these events. 911 as well; these tearful eyes watched them jump and the towers struck and falling. I thought that event would be the most striking thing I ever would witness, but I've in fact already witnessed even more surreal things.
Back to that event though... I was scheduled for a meeting in the Twin Towers two days after the event, in the morning. I use to pass through the buildings every day when I lived in New Jersey, in the morning. My company almost relocated into the Towers, but instead chose another location, again shortly before the events.
I use to find ridicule in graduate school when I shared with colleagues that I planned to avoid NYC jobs because of my terror concern. To avoid, not due to FEAR. There's a big difference.
I honestly believe our lives are about to change in a very distinct and meaningful way; the way we live is about to take a major step backward from civil and peaceful and safety. It's frightening how we can almost speak openly about these things now, and not fear criticism. It's a testament to its probability.
What happens after Iran is bombed is what has kept Iran's bombing off for this long. When the people in the know are so concerned, how can I not be. When John McCain says, "the only thing worse than bombing Iran is a nuclear Iran," I have to be very worried. Because a nuclear Iran is unthinkable.
God bless. Enjoy these last few days of peaceful living. A mess of chaos is unfolding before us. Don't let it be a surprise to you. Be prepared for it, not fearful, but prepared.
